Starting Your Own Business

Starting your own business is a great money making idea! But, you might be thinking, isn't it risky to start a business?

Not really... Many start-ups are home-based businesses with a single employee. The chances of success are high because you wouldn’t be taking on a commercial lease or a huge inventory or multiple employees.

So, if you’re thinking small… as in one employee, the best small businesses to start are often home based.

But, unless you will be starting your own business from the ground up, finding a legitimate home based business can be challenging.

There are thousands of sites advertised offline and online with a list of home based businesses, all claiming to be legitimate. It’s very important to do your homework to avoid a scam.

It isn’t so easy trying to determine whether or not it’s a legitimate work from home business without some guidelines. (I am currently researching this problem and will let you know what I've learned. All I can say right now is, it's a jungle out there...)

Starting Your Own Business From Home

My focus is going to be on starting an internet business from home. But, the principles and concepts I will share with you will work for any business.

Why Work From Home?

There are many benefits for people who want to work from home:

Be home with your family

Work when you want to, not when you have to

Be your own boss—one of the biggest reasons you might be interested in starting your own business from home

Low start up costs—and there are great tax deduction benefits for home-based businesses

Save on gas, meals, wardrobe, and time commuting

Job security—don’t have to worry about being fired or laid off

Your children learn valuable entrepreneurial skills

An additional source of income

You can do something you love and help others

The work from home phenomenon is being talked about in the news all the time. Whether you’re a senior citizen, part of the baby boomer generation, or Generation X, this movement is moving towards an internet based homed business. There’s never been a better time to start your own business.

You Are Your Business

It may seem overwhelming to start a business from home, but taken one step at a time, it can be both exciting and rewarding.

When you start a business from home, one of the most important concepts to realize is that you are your business—not your product, service, or opportunity.

Another important concept is that all business is built on relationships.

Everyone wants to do business with someone they know and trust.

When you work from home, particularly with the internet as your primary business resource, your first contact with a potential customer is often by way of email. This is convenient, but it is a somewhat impersonal way of connecting.

You must pick up the telephone and call them!

Follow up quickly and do it using the phone. Let them know there is a real person behind your website (blog, online article).

A Good Home Office

Home office organization is essential. Here are some basic requirements to start a successful home business.

Work Space
You must be able to focus with little or no distraction. Some people like to work at the kitchen table, others set up an entire room. It doesn’t need to be fancy; it just needs to work well for you.

Computer with High Speed Internet Access
I can’t imagine any business trying to function without the internet. This is your lifeline... Definitely a necessity.

Telephone with good long distance plan
The business relationship grows on the phone. Mobile phones are often used, but not required. A good long distance plan, however, is a must. I purchased a Magic Jack for $40 at Best Buy. It costs $20 a year after the first year. Works great!

Contact Management Software
Try the Oprius Contact Management program. It is affordable, functional and helps me keep track of every aspect of my business.

Follow-up and Follow through
Long-lasting business relationships are built through effective follow-up and follow-through.

An Action Plan

Develop a Marketing Plan
This includes creating strategies and how you’re going to implement them, knowing your target market, and developing a realistic marketing budget.

You’ll be prepared for long-term success with a good marketing plan. With adequate preparation, you can live your dream of starting your own business and enjoy the many rewards by becoming an internet entrepreneur.

Get Trained!
The #1 reason small business owners fail is from lack of skills and training. When you start a business from home there is plenty to learn, with knowledge of sales prospecting being high on the list.

Free training is available, as well as professional training at reasonable cost. All of this can be accessed by way of online business training and downloadable books.
